On Saturday evening they ended a five-match winning streak to take down the Serie A leaders in Cosmi's first win on the bench.

“The team put in a wonderful performance, above all in terms of character,” said the tactician who replaced Delio Rossi this month.

“Psychologically we gave our absolute best. The defence also improved markedly compared to recent outings. There are some movements that need to be perfected, but the general performance left me very satisfied.”

Palermo are in the unusual position of having 10 players away on international duty during the week leading up to the derby with Catania.

“The break is always a strange time, allowing some members of the squad to take a breather and others to face up to the prestige of international football. I don't consider it a pain, but rather a sign my players are doing well. It can only be positive for a Coach.

“I know how important the derby is for the club, our fans and the city. We are all focused on that next match.”
