Corvino: ‘Ref had an off night’

Fiorentina director Pantaleo Corvino blamed referee Antonio Damato for their 4-2 defeat to Inter. “He had an off night.”

The Viola were 3-0 down within 19 minutes and got back into it despite a Gonzalo Rodriguez red card on the stroke of half-time.

“It was a crazy evening,” Corvino told Sky Sport Italia.

“The team started badly and tried to get back into the match, but the referee had an off night with decisions that transformed the course of the game.

“It was a crazy evening,” Corvino told Sky Sport Italia.

“The team started badly and tried to get back into the match, but the referee had an off night with decisions that transformed the course of the game.

“These things can happen, just as our team had an off opening 20 minutes, Damato had an off night. The lads tried to get it back on level terms in every way they could, but the poor performance of the referee made it impossible.”

Fiorentina were furious with several decisions, including a Gonzalo Rodriguez penalty appeal in the first half and a foul on Federico Chiesa that sparked the Inter counter-attack for the fourth goal.

Above all, their anger was aimed at the straight red for Gonzalo Rodriguez in what did not appear to be a clear scoring opportunity.
