The Italian international has been frozen out by Inter Coach Roberto Mancini this season, and had been linked with a January move to the Rossoblu, but the director explains why Juan Zuniga arrived instead.

“We talked with [Coach Roberto] Donadoni and decided to shore up the defence,” Corvino explained to Sky.

“A central defender wasn’t the priority though. We thought Ranocchia could be a good solution, but given our budget we decided to concentrate on Zuniga to reinforce the full-back department.

“In the centre we’re done, we have plenty of players and Donadoni is satisfied.”

Corvino was also asked about Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri, who is under-fire for alleged homophobic comments during the Coppa Italia tie with Inter last night.

“When a person like me or Sarri comes from ‘under the pavement’, i.e the lower Leagues, they can come out of conditions where these things aren’t taken into account properly.

“Football has changed, because things which remained among men in the past are now amplified by the media.

“Sarri didn’t kill anyone, he used a colourful expression, but it wasn’t intended to offend anyone. It was a mistake.

“He’s already apologised, and I think these reactions are extreme.”
