His former chief has followed the progress at San Siro and praised the 22-year-old, claiming he ‘doesn’t understand’ how Empoli were relegated with him, Sassuolo duo Francesco Caputo and Hamed Junior Traore and Napoli defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo in the side.

“We are the first to support these guys,” Corsi told Tuttosport. “We always follow them, even when they leave Empoli. It’s always a great pleasure to watch their matches.

“I don’t understand how we were relegated last year, with him, Caputo, Di Lorenzo and Traore, who are doing well in Serie A today.”

But the Azzurri President, who also sold Rade Krunic to Milan last summer, pointed out Bennacer as one for the future.

“He’s doing really well and I’m sure he can continue to improve further,” he added. “Isma has the talent and quality to become a great player in that role.”
