Bernardo Corradi has played in Spain, England, Italy and the American MLS, but insists “Italy is at the vanguard in terms of prevention and medical testing.”

Many are calling for more stringent tests after the tragic death of Piermario Morosini during Saturday’s Pescara-Livorno Serie B match, aged just 25.

“I have played in many different Leagues and can say Italy is at the vanguard in terms of prevention and medical testing,” Corradi told Radio RTL.

“When you start becoming part of the first team, you are continually tested throughout the whole year, so it’s difficult to understand how this could happen.

“I came here to Montreal Impact and didn’t undergo any type of medical test. I signed a contract and played. The same thing happened to me in England,” said the former Manchester City and Valencia striker.

“In America they do two anti-doping tests per year, whereas in Italy two players in every team are tested in each game.”

It has been noted that several transfers to Serie A were scrapped when players failed medicals for underlying heart problems.
