The situation has improved to such a degree that the authorities announced this would be the final press conference, so the figures will now only be released to the media in its raw form.
“Today’s statistics are very comforting, as they are moving in the right direction,” said Professor Luca Richeldi of the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome.

“We registered a fall of over 3,000 among those currently positive and gave almost 5,000 the all-clear. We have six regions that have not registered any deaths over the last 24 hours and another nine regions with fewer than 10 deaths in the same period.
“We have confirmation the measures have brought a drastic reduction in the pressure on the nation’s healthcare system. If we look at the last 15 days, we have essentially halved the death rate, doubled the rate of recovery, halved the number in intensive care and drastically reduced those in hospital. We are moving in the right direction.”
Lombardy was always the epicentre and remains so, as 13,772 out of the total 27,967 deaths were in that region, compared to the next on the list Piedmont with 3,066.
The five regions with the most cases at this moment are Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Tuscany.
This would back the calls from southern Italian regions to open up lockdown restrictions earlier there compared to the areas worst hit, but the Government is taking a cautious approach in case the virus gets a second wind.
