Gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona alleges Nicolò Zaniolo was betting on Roma games while part of the squad, while he also claims Sandro Tonali breached betting rules.

It was Corona who on August 2 reported that Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli was betting on sporting events, suggesting he had a serious gambling addiction and was €1m in debt due to these problems.

Fagioli is formally under investigation by both the sporting and civil justice system for betting on illegal websites and Corona was taken in for questioning as a witness today.

Now Corona alleges that two other Italy internationals, Tonali formerly of Milan and now at Newcastle United, plus ex-Roma and current Aston Villa forward Zaniolo, have also been betting and in a way that would be far more damaging than Fagioli’s approach.

His most extraordinary claim is that Zaniolo was “betting on Roma in a Coppa Italia game when he was injured.”

Corona has tried to frame this as Zaniolo being ‘on the bench,’ but it remains to be seen if he was actually part of the squad that day or in the stands.

Zaniolo left Roma in February 2023 to join Galatasaray, then moved to Aston Villa in August.
