The Coppa Italia preliminary rounds saw Ternana eliminate Avellino on penalties to set up a Bologna clash, while Perugia defeated Sudtirol 1-0 to face Genoa.

In order to prevent the tournament being just 20 Serie A and 20 Serie B clubs, a preliminary round was introduced to give Serie C sides a chance to compete.

Perugia knocked Sudtirol out with a header from Carretta just after the restart, setting up their showdown with Genoa in the opening round on August 13.

It was a longer evening in the other match, where Ternana and Avellino were 1-1 after 120 minutes.

That tie had to be decided on penalties and Avellino missed three in a row to crash out of the Coppa Italia.

Ternana will therefore play against Bologna on August 16.
