Serie A side Lecce suffered the first major upset of the Coppa Italia, beaten 3-2 at home in extra time by Cittadella.

Lecce got off to a dreadful start, Wladimiro Falcone needing saves on Ignacio Lores and Andrea Danzi in the opening 120 seconds.

However, they took the lead with Gabriel Strefezza’s right-foot finish into the corner on the hour mark.

Cittadella equalised and forced extra time thanks to a close-range Raul Asencio header on Giuseppe Carriero’s assist.

The visitors looked stronger as the game wore on, Nicola Pavan and Mirko Anonucci threatening to win it during the 90 minutes.

They therefore did turn it around early into extra time with Mamadou Tounkara from the edge of the box, then he completed his brace after a corner.

Lecce got back into it with Lorenzo Colombo springing the offside trap and he thought he’d equalised for 3-3 with a low volley from eight yards in stoppages, but shinned it just wide.

Cittadella will face the winners of Palermo vs. Torino in the Second Round in October.
