The Coppa Italia format will change again from next season, with only 40 clubs participating, all of them from Serie A and Serie B.

The tournament had been open to Serie C and even Serie D teams from the earliest stages.

However, a meeting in the Lega this afternoon reportedly opted for adjustments to make the games more ‘appetising’ for television rights and viewers.

According to Calcio e Finanza, the 20 Serie A and 20 Serie B clubs will participate, starting from August 15.

According to Calcio e Finanza, the 20 Serie A and 20 Serie B clubs will participate, starting from August 15.

At that date, 12 Serie A sides will already be taking part in the competition.

As things stand, the top 12 Serie A teams don’t enter until the Round of 16.

In the current campaign, no Serie C or D sides survived the first three rounds, so by the fourth round, it was all Serie A and B clubs anyway.

Juventus and Atalanta will meet in the Final on May 19.
