In an unrelated incident to the game, Esposito was with a group of Napoli supporters walking towards the stadium when they encountered a Roma ultra who had been barred from attending games and ran a kiosk in the area.
There was an altercation and the Roma ultra fired his gun, mortally wounding Esposito.
