Fiorentina struggled to beat Benevento 2-1 and were grateful for several Antonio Rosati saves, setting up a Coppa Italia Round of 16 appointment with Napoli.

Nikola Milenkovic opened the scoring when he sprung the offside trap thanks to a Gabriele Moncini error and nodded in the Igor cross.

It was Antonio Rosati’s first start in the Viola jersey for two years and he absolutely stepped up to the plate, because he made a series of saves to keep his team in front.

Rosati denied Gennaro Acampora one-on-one and dived down to meet a Kamil Glik header, while Aleksandar Kokorin fired straight at Nicolò Manfredini when sent clear by Marco Benassi’s back-heel flick, one of the only times he got himself into a genuine scoring position.

Fiorentina doubled their lead straight after the restart with Riccardo Sottil at the back post, his header parried the first time, but he turned in on the rebound.

It didn’t last long, Moncini peeling away from Lorenzo Venuti to meet the Marco Sau assist from close range.

Rosati was at full stretch for a one-handed save on Giacomo Calò, while Gianluca Lapadula had the ball in the net at the back post, but it was disallowed for offside.

There was more bad news for Fiorentina, as Erick Pulgar was caught hard on the back of the ankle and had to be substituted, left in tears on the bench.
