Within 13 minutes, Andrea Arrighini had given Cittadella the advantage, albeit with the aid of a deflection off Pa Konate.

Marios Oikonomou hit the side-netting, but Alfred Gomis parried another Arrighini attempt and Marco Borriello nodded just wide for the hosts.

Just as SPAL were pushing for an equaliser, Andrea Schenetti sealed their fate at the 87th minute.

Cittadella will face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in the Round of 16 on December 14.
