Cagliari have set up a Coppa Italia Round of 16 meeting with Sassuolo after seeing off Cittadella 3-1, although the pick of the goals was from the visitors.

This fixture already earned its place in the history books, as it was officiated by Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, so became the first game involving a Serie A club to be refereed by a woman.

It took just 16 minutes to break the deadlock with an Alessandro Deiola header on Gabriele Zappa’s cross.

Damir Ceter doubled the advantage just before half-time, after Deiola’s initial shot had been parried into his path.

Cittadella goalkeeper Luca Maniero was again far from convincing on the third goal, this time Gaston Pereiro with the follow-up.

The minnows had the ball in the net twice during the closing stages, the first from Davide Mazzocco disallowed for offside, but there was nothing to deny the absolutely stunning long-range screamer from Daniele Donnarumma.

Joao Pedro thumped the upright from point-blank range and Cagliari will face Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia Round of 16.
