Former Inter coach Antonio Conte said Milan ‘should use’ the Liverpool match ‘as a growth path’, returning to the Champions League ‘with the worst possible game’.

Milan were back in the Champions League for the first time in seven years on Wednesday, but didn’t manage to pick up a positive result against Liverpool on Merseyside.

Inter are struggling in the Champions League, only five wins since 2018

Liverpool picked up a 3-2 win in the opening game, despite being down 1-2 at the break after goals from Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz in the first half.

Conte didn’t qualify for the knockout stages of the competition in his two years with Inter but was back in the Champions League as a pundit for Sky Sport Italia at Anfield.

The former Nerazzurri coach said Milan ‘managed to keep their identity’ during the match against the Reds and said Anfield was ‘more silent’ than usual.

“I think Milan should use this match as a growth path,” Conte said. “They returned to the Champions League with perhaps the worst game they could play.

“But despite this, they managed to keep their identity to stay in the game. It was a shame about the goal they scored at the beginning of the second half, because it affected a lot.

“I felt the stadium was more silent than usual, that goal gave them a great boost.”
