An extraordinary account has been given of what Antonio Conte did to try and turn the tide on his failing Tottenham career before having his contract terminated by mutual agreement on Sunday evening.

After suffering a poor run of form which saw them pick up just one win in five matches, including heavy defeats against Aston Villa, Arsenal and Manchester City in January, Conte turned to an unbelievable tactic in an attempt to re-motivate his players.

The 53-year-old decided to bestow more responsibility upon his Tottenham players, turning to them to provide answers for their lack of form after the turn of the new year.

Corriere dello Sport writes that Conte shut his players in the dressing room at the club’s training ground and locked the door behind him, forcing the squad to come up with an answer for their poor run of results.

In response, the Tottenham players decided to ask Conte to deploy a more offensive style of play, claiming they had been restricted by Conte’s defensive principles.

The reaction led to an immediate upturn in form as Spurs went on to record three wins in succession across all competitions.

However, things soon turned sour once again as the North Londoners fell to a 4-1 defeat at Leicester in the league, before losing 1-0 to Milan in the Champions League.

Shortly after, Tottenham were knocked out of the FA Cup in humiliating fashion by Championship side Sheffield United whilst Conte was back in Italy recovering from his emergency gallbladder surgery.

It is widely believed that the loss against Sheffield United was the beginning of the end for Conte at Tottenham.
