It was announced today that the prosecutor in the Calcioscommesse trial has requested that the Azzurri boss, who will take over Chelsea in the summer, be given a six-month suspended jail sentence.

“It’s no surprise,” Leonardo Cammarata, Conte’s lawyer, told ANSA.

“We’re preparing to refute the prosecution’s story. They're alleging omission, where it’s required that the Coach prevents the event [the fix] taking place, whereas before they were alleging active participation.

“We’re prepared to refute this in fact and law. We’re confident of our arguments.”

Conte was initially accused of failing to report fixes in two matches during his time in charge of Siena: Novara-Siena and Albinoleffe-Siena.

The former Juventus Coach has always denied any knowledge that the games were fixed, and the charge relating to the Novara game was dropped.

Conte served a four-month ban for the other match, and is now going through the criminal courts. He has maintained his innocence throughout.

A verdict is expected in mid-May.
