The Italian coach spoke at a press conference ahead of Real Madrid-Inter in Champions League tomorrow.

Conte confirmed he came close to becoming the coach of the Merengues in the past.

“Surely there were a couple of moments in which I was very close to coaching Real Madrid,” Conte said.

“However, the season had already begun, it would have been difficult to take over, a schedule had already been made by the club and in a very sincere way I preferred to postpone.”

“Right now I’m really focused on Inter, I started a project here with a very strong ownership and I’m happy. We’re creating something important.

“It is true that in the past, there was an opportunity to become the coach of Real Madrid, but perhaps the times were not ripe. I want to continue the project here.”

The Nerazzurri have two points after the first two games of the group stage while Real Madrid have only one.

"Real Madrid are strong, they’ve been built to win this competition. They have players who have won this cup several times, we know we are going to face a team that come from a strange defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk and a comeback with Borussia Monchengladbach.

“We must be ready to suffer, if we are good at suffering we can take away the satisfactions. We come here proposing our game, we will not put ourselves in a corner as a boxer who defends himself looking for a single shot for the knockout.

“Last year we scored many goals, 113 and we also started this season scoring many.

“The ratio between what we create and what we collect is, however, unbalanced. We score many goals but they could be even more. We’re training to get all the players involved in the offensive phase.”

Conte did also discuss his relationship with Zizou Zidane and whether Alexis Sanchez is ready to start against Real Madrid in an interview with Sky Sport.
