Conte overtakes Man United and targets top four

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham have already leapfrogged Manchester United in the Premier League table and are just four points off a Champions League placement.

Tottenham beat Leeds United 2-1 yesterday, giving Conte his first Premier League win as Spurs’ coach.

Before the break, he had picked up a 0-0 draw against Everton in his first league match in charge of Spurs.

Conte arrived in North London after being considered for the Manchester United job at the end of October. However, the Red Devils’ opted to stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, snubbing the chance to get the former Inter and Juventus coach.

The former striker has then left United by mutual agreement after defeats against Manchester City and Claudio Ranieri’s Watford and Conte took just two games to overtake the Red Devils in the table.

Spurs were two points behind United when Conte arrived in North London, while now United have 17 points against Tottenham’s 19.

Conte has spoken about his first few weeks in charge of Tottenham in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport and set the top-four finish as his target for this season.

“We have a young team with ample room for improvement,” he said.

“We don’t have much experience but we must make up for it with hard work and enthusiasm. We’d be happy to earn a top-four finish, that would mean to leapfrog one of the best four clubs.”
