Italy CT Antonio Conte says the absence of Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi is a good chance for Marco Verratti to impress.
The midfielder has been in fine form for Paris Saint-Germain, drawing praise for his performance as his side eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League, and the Azzurri boss hints that he’ll start against Bulgaria.
“[Pirlo and De Rossi] are two good players who still have a lot to offer,” Conte said in his Press conference ahead of the European Championship qualifier.

“[Pirlo and De Rossi] are two good players who still have a lot to offer,” Conte said in his Press conference ahead of the European Championship qualifier.
“However, this can be a chance for someone like Verratti to demonstrate that they can inherit this midfield.
“It’s time to evaluate and see what situations are on the horizon. I choose the players for the national team based on their form, we monitor all the players and look at their psychological condition.
“I want to send a message to everyone, young and old: the national team is for the best. You have to prove your worth and that you deserve it.
“We shouldn’t hope that the CT is left with few alternatives, that would take lustre away from the national team, and pride from the player himself.
“We want to do the best for Italy.”
It has been almost four months since Conte last got together with his players, with planned extra meet-ups cancelled, and the former Juventus Coach admits it’s been tough.
“These four months were not easy. We tried to keep busy, to see other teams and Leagues, the way they train in other countries…
“Still, I wasn’t content. It’s not in my nature, I like to work. I’m very happy to get back to work now, that’s beyond doubt.”
