Italy secured their spot in the Euro 2016 Round of 16 thanks to a 1-0 victory in Toulouse and Eder’s 88th minute strike.

“He had a fundamental role during qualifying and scored the equaliser in Bulgaria,” noted Conte in a Press conference.

“In certain situations he becomes very important, as he has technique and pace. He needed to rediscover that physical sharpness and change of pace.

“Scoring a goal like this really means something. Eder knew he was behind in terms of fitness levels, so got his head down and worked hard to be here at the Euros. I made this choice.

“Eder isn’t the only player who was up for debate for fans and media. What interests me is looking someone in the eye and understanding what they can bring, regardless of what club they play for. I choose those who can help the Nazionale.

“I am also happy for Simone Zaza, who came off the bench and provided the assist. These are all important signs. Winning helps our self-confidence.”

Italy are already qualified for the next round and Conte hinted there would be changes against the Republic of Ireland.

“Many doubted we’d even get out of the group phase, so to win both opening matches is very satisfying,” continued the Coach.

“The game with Ireland will enable everyone to feel a part of this tournament. It’s fantastic to be qualified a game early, as it allows us to give room to those players who deserve it for what they do in training.

“I think the strength of this team is knowing its strengths and weaknesses. We know ourselves inside out. This is a solid foundation to build on, but keep our feet on the ground.

“Having said all that, we want to win the third game too. I won’t just rotate the squad, but choose players who will bring us to victory.”

There were more Sweden fans than Italians in Toulouse on Friday, but above all they seemed more organised into a wall of yellow.

“We need great passion. I’d love to see the fans wear blue in the stands and send out a great image. Seeing the Swedes all dressed in yellow was a wonderful sight. They don’t have to be Italy shirts per se, but just blue to create that sense of unity.”
