Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso comes out strongly against the Super League, warning he ‘ran away from America because of this kind of thinking.’

The project of a breakaway league created and run by 12 ever-present clubs, including Juventus, Inter and Milan, is in tatters after the six English sides and Inter pulled out.

“I ran away from America three years ago because I like the way football is here. I like to take risks, not like in the USA,” Commisso told the official Fiorentina website.

“I don’t like the closed league the way they have in America and it’s the worst possible thing to introduce here. In that situation, the values and principles of meritocracy do not exist.

“The 12 founding clubs were disrespectful. I came here respecting the Italian and European rules and system of football. I don’t want things to suddenly change like that, it’s not good for the fans or for Fiorentina.”

The Super League was not exactly cancelled, but put on hold and reconsidered after just 48 hours.

“I’ve never seen a project announced and then withdrawn within the space of two days,” added Commisso.

“Why were their fans not consulted? Why were none of the Serie A clubs consulted? Why was there no transparency when we are supposed to be associates in the Lega Serie A?

“If 12 clubs have revenues worth almost €600m before COVID and are already six or seven times bigger than us: is that not enough?”
