Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso insists his club got a bargain by selling Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus and feels Davide Astori ‘was there with us’ during the win over Milan.

The Viola notched up their second consecutive Serie A victory thanks to a Nico Gonzalez penalty and acrobatic diving Luka Jovic header on Dodo’s cross.

Theo Hernandez pulled one back in stoppages with a thunderous strike into the near top corner, but it was not enough to prevent a 2-1 result at the Stadio Franchi.

“I want to thank my fans, because we set a record for the last 40 years with this crowd. We beat a great team. Many critics said we couldn’t beat the big clubs, but today we did,” Commisso told DAZN.

“I told Nico today that he would score a goal. Jovic had a great goal too, Arthur Cabral played very well. Our forwards are strong, they are criticised, but fortunately Rocco is here and he never criticised his players.”

Commisso had already said this week that Fiorentina got by far the better of the deal by selling Vlahovic to Juventus for over €80m, replacing him with Jovic and Cabral.

“I said those two between them scored 20 goals, now it is 21. If someone just does the numbers, he’ll understand that spending €15m for two players who score 21 goals is a bargain.”

The President had been expected to fly back to America this weekend, but revealed he is staying in Florence for the first leg of the Conference League Round of 16 against Sivasspor on Thursday.

This was an emotional night at the Stadio Franchi, on the fifth anniversary of the death of captain Astori, who passed away in his sleep from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Commisso only purchased the club from the Della Valle brothers in June 2019, so was not part of Fiorentina during Astori’s time there.

“I had Davide’s brother next to me in the stands today. Poor Davide. He did so much for Fiorentina and the spirit of the people of Florence. This game is dedicated to him. He was there with us on the field to help us beat a big team like Milan.”
