Marcello Nicchi believes that former Serie A referee Pierluigi Collina has the credentials to stand for the role of FIGC President.

The Italian Football Federation are in line to shortly decide on a successor to Giancarlo Abete, with the choice seen as primarily between leading candidate and current President of the National Amateur League Carlo Tavecchio, and resigning FIGC Vice-President Demetrio Albertini.

However, for one of the deciding parties in the matter, head of the Referees’ Association, one former match official should be considered.

“For me, Collina is a respected figure in the international arena who also has managerial and decision-making abilities,” Nicchi has told reporters today.

“Here there are some issues, but at present it seems to me that no-one is willing to take the situation in hand, and all are pretending that nothing happened.

“Why for example has the Federal Council not been brought together, and we remain so far from a decision being made?”
