Udinese Coach Stefano Colantuono’s lawyer was “very surprised” by the match-fixing trial recommendation for the ex-Atalanta boss.

Today prosecutor Roberto Di Martino requested 104 suspects be brought to trial, so now the evidence will be presented to a judge at a preliminary hearing to decide whether or not to go ahead.

Among the suspects is ex-Atalanta tactician Colantuono, now in charge of Udinese.

“We are very surprised by this trial recommendation because in the evidence there is nothing on which to build an accusation against Colantuono,” said lawyer Marco De Luca.

“The only element the prosecutor was able to point to was a text message referencing ‘Mr’, without any specification of who it was referring to or explanation during the investigation.

“Cristiano Doni, who wrote the message, was unable to say what it referred to. What is absolutely certain is that the name Stefano Colantuono never appears directly or indirectly.

“Considering the determination of the prosecutor, we will ask as soon as possible to be judged in a fast-track trial during the preliminary hearing, in the absolute certainty that Colantuono cannot be held responsible for any wrong-doing.”
