“Serie A needs to be leading the way and Lotito, for all his conflicts, cannot avoid looking after its needs,” Genoa patron Preziosi told La Repubblica.

“None of the candidates have enough votes to win. If Sibilia keeps his work, then we’ll see him supported by Serie A, who have so far given a large support to Lotito. If the Amateur League, who have 34 per cent of the vote, go with Lotito, then he’ll win.”

Lotito said that he had 12 Serie A sides backing his candidacy, but their names have until now not been confirmed.

“In the Lega Serie A there are Juventus, Torino, Roma, Fiorentina and Sassuolo who are against Lotito. From what we’ve seen, if there is a candidate who receives unanimous support from Serie A, then Sibilia and the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti will put their backing behind him.

“The problem here is that we don’t have a unanimous candidate.”
