La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Sandro Tonali’s lawyers are close to reaching an agreement with the FIGC Prosecutor over a ban for the Newcastle midfielder following an investigation into alleged betting breaches.
Tonali’s lawyers met the FIGC Prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné in Rome on Monday to negotiate a plea bargain on behalf of the Newcastle and Italy midfielder.
Tonali has reportedly admitted to gambling on Milan and Brescia games while under contract with the Rossoneri and the Rondinelle. However, he is not suspected of match-fixing, having always bet on their ex-clubs to win.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims there’s a ‘clear path’ for an agreement between the two parties.
The FIGC Prosecutor and the player’s lawyers are still negotiating the final details, but it is possible that Tonali will know the ban’s length before Wednesday’s Champions League match between his Newcastle side and Borussia Dortmund.
According to Gazzetta, Tonali will likely get a year’s ban, more than his compatriot Nicolò Fagioli, who had not gambled on his club, Juventus.
Tonali has cooperated with authorities and has sought help to treat his gambling addiction so his lawyers hope to reduce the inevitable suspension, which could have been higher than three years for breach of Article 24.
