According to Gazzetta dello Sport, club President Aurelio De Laurentiis had initially placed Montella at the top of his shortlist, but was put off by a clause which would require €5m compensation to the Viola.
The former striker was sacked by the Florentine outfit yesterday, with the club admitting that there had been a disagreement over a clause in the Coach’s contract.
Milan were also thought to be interested in bringing Montella to San Siro, but are instead ready to appoint Sinisa Mihajlovic, who has left Sampdoria.
The clause is likely to be at the centre of severance talks, between the Viola and Montella. The Coach has two years remaining on his contract, and having been sacked would be entitled to pay for the remainder of his deal.
