There are some remarkable reports that assistant manager Alberico Evani decided to leave the Italy squad in protest after Roberto Mancini called up Leonardo Bonucci.

The 60-year-old was a teammate of Mancini’s at Sampdoria and became his assistant manager for the senior Italy squad in April 2018.

However, he resigned last week after 61 matches together, including the triumphant EURO 2020 campaign.

According to Il Giornale, the reasons behind the breakdown of the rapport between Mancini and old friend Evani were focused around the status of Bonucci.

The veteran Juventus defender made costly errors upon his return to international duty after a period of injury problems and was substituted at half-time in the 2-1 Nations League semi-final defeat to Spain on June 15.

He was then left out for the third-place final with the Netherlands, but continued to insist he wants to be part of the Italy squad for EURO 2024.

That seems unlikely now that Juventus have excluded him from their group, trying to force him into accepting a transfer elsewhere.

Il Giornale newspaper claims that Evani shared Juve’s view that Bonucci’s career is essentially over at the highest level and he should not be called up for Italy again.

  1. Every squad needs balance with youth and experience but not nostalgia. You have to say goodnight to your legends and build for the future.
