This was the Biancocelesti’s first foray into the Champions League knockouts for 20 years, and they missed Luiz Felipe and Stefan Radu, so Mateo Musacchio and Patric stepped in. Bayern were reigning European and World club champions, but made the trip without Thomas Muller, Douglas Costa, Benjamin Pavard, Serge Gnabry and Corentin Tolisso, so 17-year-old Jamal Musiala was given a surprise start. Ciro Immobile came face to face with Rober Lewandowski, having beaten him to the Golden Shoe

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic did well to intercept a Nicklas Sule pull-back from the by-line, then Pepe Reina got a fingertip to Joshua Kimmich’s cross to take it away from another potential Lewandowski tap-in.

However, Lazio literally gifted the opener with a dreadful Mateo Musacchio back-pass that Lewandowski intercepted to tap into an empty net.

Milinkovic-Savic was furious when he seemed to be tripped by Jerome Boateng inside the penalty area, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.

Instead, Bayern doubled their lead, as Alphonso Davies started the move from the left, Leon Goretzka flicked it on and Musiala was in so much space on the edge of the box that he could pick his spot and drill into the near bottom corner. It was the first Champions League goal for the player who turns 18 later this week.

Simone Inzaghi opted to make a tactical change after just 30 minutes, hauling off Musacchio to introduce Senad Lulic, although it was Adam Marusic who dropped into centre-back in a new role.

Reina stuck out a leg to parry from Lewandowski, while Lazio had a double chance when Manuel Lazzari rolled across and Joaquin Correa couldn’t quite get there, then Immobile’s follow-up was deflected for a corner.

Just as Lazio created another good opportunity with Correa not getting to it, Bayern scored their third on the counter. Patric was caught in possession by Kingsley Coman, who could run half the length of the pitch by himself, Reina parried the first attempt, but could do nothing on Leroy Sane’s follow-up.

Straight after the restart, things went from bad to worse. Bayern broke from a Lazio corner, Sane sprinted down the left and tried to roll across for Alphonso Davies, but Francesco Acerbi got there first for an unfortunate own goal.

Correa did at least claw back some pride for Lazio, as he went on a slalom through the Bayern defence and prodded the finish past Manuel Neuer for a consolation goal.

He almost got another moments later, his curler forcing a one-handed Neuer save after a give-and-go with Immobile, and the Italian tested the goalkeeper with a powerful strike.

Manuel Lazzari repeatedly beat Alphonso Davies for pace and Wesley Hoedt and Acerbi failed to make the most of headers from corners.

They almost gifted another by playing out from the back, but Reina came to the rescue on Lewandowski.
