The Aquile knew only a miracle would turn around the 4-1 home defeat from the first leg in this Champions League Round of 16. Luiz Felipe was still injured, but Ciro Immobile and Lucas Leiva were rested and Adam Marusic moved into defence. The hosts missed Douglas Costa and Corentin Tolisso, but gave goalkeeper Alexander Nubel a rare start rather than Manuel Neuer.

Joaquin Correa scuffed an effort wide, while Leroy Sane’s left-foot strike skimmed the far post and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic couldn’t get enough power onto a diving header from Luis Alberto’s ball over the top, aiming it straight at Nubel.

Bayern Munich were awarded an incredibly soft penalty, as on a corner Vedat Muriqi was pushing and shoving with Leon Goretzka, who went down very easily. Robert Lewandowski converted the spot-kick, sending Pepe Reina the wrong way.

Mohamed Fares went off with a knee injury at half-time and Lewandowski immediately forced a Reina save at the near post after Lazio had given possession away cheaply.

There was another injury, a particularly nasty one, as Lazzari dislocated his little finger and was howling in pain as the medics tried to pop it back into place.

Lewandowski’s daisy-cutter bounced off the far post and into the grateful arms of Reina. Correa sprung the offside trap and forced a save from Nubel at the near post, although the flag was up and seemed to be incorrect.

Moments later, Bayern scored their second, as substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was sent clear by a David Alaba through ball and dinked it over Reina.

Lazio finally got a consolation goal, just as they had in the first leg, when an Andreas Pereira free kick was floated to the back post for Marco Parolo’s header.

That seemed to almost release something in the Aquile, who immediately earned a corner, from which Francesco Acerbi’s header looped onto the roof of the net.

Reina had to rush out to parry when an inspired Sane slide-rule pass found Gnabry at the far post.
