Plans were turned upside down before the game when it emerged Cristiano Ronaldo had failed a fitness test with a muscular problem and was not even on the bench.

The first half was an uninspired affair without a single shot on target, but City did lose David Silva to injury and Karim Benzema followed during the break.

Real Madrid stepped up a gear following the restart and so did Joe Hart, as he Sergio Ramos nodded a corner straight at him.

Hart also fingertipped a Jese Rodriguez header on to the bar on 71 minutes, then used his feet to deny a Casemiro header from a corner and his stomach to parry Pepe’s effort from another corner in the final minutes.

Curiously, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane managed to split his trousers again on the touchline, something he had already experienced against Wolfsburg in the last round.

Deep into stoppages Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick was fingertipped over the bar in the best opportunity Manchester City had.
