Manchester City are set to test Roma with a tempting €23m offer for Daniele De Rossi, reports are suggesting.

De Rossi's future in the capital is in some doubt given that he has just a year left on his contract in Rome.

Although the player would like to extend with his hometown club, agreeing financial terms is understood to be a problem.

Some sources suggest that the difference between demand and offer is as high as €1.5m a campaign.

Italian international De Rossi, 27, is a product of the club's youth system who currently nets over €4m a term.

City are said to be hoping to take advantage of the situation by making the Italian club an offer of €23m.

It is also claimed that the Premiership club are willing to give the World Cup winner a staggering €9m a season.

New Roma boss Luis Enrique recently underlined how important De Rossi was to his plans at the Stadio Olimpico.

"He is one of the most important players around, not only at Roma, but in Italy and the world," noted the tactician.

"I already knew him as a player, but I like him even more now that I know him as a person.

"It's nice to see his hunger to win, but also how he listens. He works with humility to place himself at the disposal of the squad.

"I hope he feels a part of this project. For me he is fundamental, a key element."

De Rossi, who made his debut for the club in 2001, has played in 249 League games for the outfit, scoring 29 goals.
