Atalanta's Luca Cigarini admits that he was surprised to be included in the latest Italian national squad.

The playmaker was named in the Azzurri party last night for their last two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Serbia and Northern Ireland.

"I'm very happy with my call up," the midfielder, currently on loan from Napoli, told the club's website.

"I have to be honest and say that I didn't really expect this, but I think it is the right reward for what Atalanta have done so far this season."

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli, whose side have already qualified for next summer's championships, knows Cigarini well from their time together at Parma.

Atalanta have made an impressive start to the season with three wins and a draw from their first five games.

Unfortunately for the club, the Nerazzurri started the season with a six-point deduction.
