Napoli have confirmed a new contract for midfielder Luca Cigarini, plus the details of the extension of his loan with Atalanta.

The 26-year-old impressed with the Nerazzurri last term, becoming a regular fixture in Stefano Colantuono’s side.

Slight summer speculation was that the midfielder might have earned a chance to play with Napoli next term, the club who have owned him since a 2009 purchase from Atalanta.

Slight summer speculation was that the midfielder might have earned a chance to play with Napoli next term, the club who have owned him since a 2009 purchase from Atalanta.

However, Atalanta confirmed this morning with a brief statement his return to them on loan, with the Partenopei this evening adding further detail with their own statement.

The San Paolo side have confirmed an extension to Cigarini’s contract with them until June 2015, but that his return to Bergamo sees Atalanta handed an option to take co-ownership of the player too.

Cigarini has expressed his delight at the move with some words released through Atalanta’s official website today.

“I thank President Antonio Percassi and director general Pierpaolo Marino for giving me the opportunity to wear this shirt again.

“It’s a great chance and I will do everything possible to repay the trust shown. Finally my wish has come true.

“This past season we achieved great things, but now we start from scratch and there is still much to prove. Next week we get serious, I cannot wait.”
