Giovanni ‘Cholito’ Simeone set a couple of different records when bagging his Champions League brace for Napoli against Rangers, equalling his father Diego and a Federico Chiesa coup.

The Argentina international is having his debut Champions League campaign after the move from Hellas Verona over the summer and made an immediate impact, netting twice in the first half tonight at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

That took his tally to four goals in his first four Champions League appearances.

Only one Argentinian player had been able to achieve such a strong start to his European career and it was Giovanni’s father, Diego Simeone.

Cholo did it in only two games for Atletico Madrid in September 1996, scoring two against both Steaua Bucharest and Widzew Lodz.

It also means that the Simeone family are only the second father and son due to both score a Champions League brace.

This had previously been achieved by Federico Chiesa for Juventus and his dad Enrico at Parma in November 1997.
