The Nerazzurri have struggled under new boss Walter Mazzarri, recently losing to Chelsea and Valencia on their American tour. They play Juventus later today.
“At this stage of the season you prioritise the workload over being fresh and perhaps having a better chance of getting a result,” the Romanian stopper noted on the club’s website.
“That’s precisely why the results of pre-season friendlies mean very little, especially as we're playing against great teams, some of which are further ahead with their preparation than we are.”
Chivu also underlined that his side are still getting to grips with the tactical needs of new boss Walter Mazzarri.
“We're concentrating on taking on board the Coach's methods and instructions and I'm sure we'll see our work bear fruit when the points start to matter,” added the former Roma man. “Mazzarri is very experienced and very scrupulous.
“We'll soon be back to where we deserve to be, challenging for the top positions. In the meantime we're trying to make the most of the pre-season to get ourselves ready.”
