Chievo have released a statement after they were referred to the Disciplinary Commission for the betting scandal, claiming Stefano Bettarini was “promotional.”

Chievo are included due to ‘indirect responsibility' as one of their players, the now-retired Bettarini, was accused of ‘unsporting behaviour' by betting on Atalanta-Piacenza” data-scaytid=”15″>Atalanta-Piacenza and Inter-Lecce” data-scaytid=”16″>Inter-Lecce.
“A.C. Chievo Verona point out that the former Sampdoria” data-scaytid=”17″>Sampdoria defender was signed in October 2010 for a possible future promotional operation that included, among other things, seeing Bettarini play at the end of a few games,” read the statement.
“It was a project that remained in theory only and was not followed through.”
Essentially, Chievo suggest Bettarini could not have been their responsibility because he never actually played for them.
Bettarini has long been one of the most high-profile players in Italy due to modelling contracts, promotional deals, a spell as a television presenter and his marriage to TV star Simona Ventura.
