Chievo have their ‘feet on the ground’ despite topping the Serie A table, according to Simone Pepe.

The Flying Donkeys take on Juventus on Saturday having won their opening two games convincingly, including a 4-0 demolition of Lazio in Week 2.

The match will mark an instant return for the 32-year-old to his former club, as he recently ended a five-year spell with the Bianconeri.

“In the last two and a half years I’ve been a cheerleader more than playing,” Pepe said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’s fantastic but we still have our feet on the ground. We’ve started very well, but we’re fighting to avoid relegation. So first we achieve safety, then we can enjoy ourselves.

“Rolando Maran has made a good impression on me straight away. The first time we spoke he said: ‘I’m direct’ and I said ‘then we’ll get on’.

“Chievo convinced me because I want to relaunch my career and this is a team that allows me to play at a good level.”

The former Italy international also took the time to compare some of the Coaches he has played under during his career.

“Antonio Conte is a perfectionist, the best Coach I’ve had,” he said.

“Max Allegri is a great Coach who arrived at the right time – he managed the group perfectly. Marcello Lippi is a great motivator, he’s similar to Conte.”
