The Italian press had widespread praise for Federico Chiesa for his leading role in Juventus’ Coppa Italia semi-final first leg win over Lazio, reacting to his goal and general performance.

The 26-year-old Italian winger has struggled to dispel his doubters this season as he’s dealt with poor form, fitness concerns and a defensively focused system in Turin. Prior to the cup clash with the Biancocelesti, he’d scored just twice since the turn of the year.

Chiesa put in a resounding performance against Lazio in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie, a crucial game for Juventus following their dire form in Serie A as of late. The 26-year-old scored their opening goal in the 50th minute and continued to look threatening across the match.

La Gazzetta dello Sport were impressed with the Juventus winger’s work, writing: “Fede in the centre of the village. First goal in the Italian Cup, with perfect timing on Cambiaso’s ball. Swings left and right, perpetual motion.”

Tuttosport analysed Chiesa’s performance, underlining the importance of his goal after a fairly quiet evening, saying: “The central lunge where he cut the Lazio defence in two and found the goal is a powerful tonic for him and for his relationship with the stadium, as also demonstrated by the subsequent acceleration on the left on the wings of enthusiasm.

“A little in the middle and a little to the right, until that moment he hadn’t found a place in the match. And a couple of poor plays had made the fans tense, who had made themselves heard…”

La Repubblica took an international angle to Chiesa’s performance, referring to Luciano Spalletti and the Azzurri, writing: “A chance, a goal. And coach Spalletti rejoices almost like Allegri.”
