Federico Chiesa has found the net in a Euro game 25 years after his father Enrico and that’s the first time a father and a son score a goal in the history of the competition.
Italy needed extra time to break the deadlock against Austria in the last 16 stage of Euro 2020 at Wembley.
The 23-year-old controlled a Spinazzola long pass, waited for Lainer to come across him and then whacked in with the left boot from a tight angle.
His goal came 25 years and 12 days after the one of his father Enrico against Czech Republic at Euro 96. It’s the first time a father and a son score a goal in the history of the competition. Federico wasn’t born yet when his father scored at Anfield at Euro ’96.
Roberto Mancini’s side eventually booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a Matteo Pessina goal that helped Italy seal a 2-1 win.
The Azzurri will play the next game on Friday July 2 against either Belgium or Portugal at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
