Federico Chiesa explains Juventus are trying out ‘new, modern tactics’ after a 3-0 victory away to Udinese. ‘We mustn’t just clam up at the back.’

The Old Lady came flying out of the blocks at the Dacia Arena, taking a 3-0 lead by half-time with Federico Chiesa’s strike, a Dusan Vlahovic penalty and Adrien Rabiot header from point-blank range.

It puts them on the right track to start the Serie A season and is their first away win to open the campaign by three clear goals in over 20 years.

“It was a great performance and in the first half we were particularly intense, attacking them high up and that is what modern football is all about. We mustn’t just clam up in the back, we need to push and press, which we showed today,” Chiesa told DAZN.

This sounds like a rather different approach to the one that Max Allegri took last term and which saw him bitterly criticised by fans as well as media and occasionally his own players.

Chiesa found the net two minutes into the campaign and explained his celebration.

“I wanted to have a kneeslide for the celebration, as I hadn’t done it for a while. I made a joke to the guys on the bench noting I scored one at last.”

The Italian was used as a wing-back last year, but is more of a striker now partnering Vlahovic.

“We are not static, we move around a lot, and that is what the coach is asking of us. With the arrival of Francesco Magnanelli too, we are trying out these new tactics.”

Magnanelli is the former Sassuolo player who joined Allegri’s staff this summer to help with tactical ideas.

It is the perfect start to the season, but Chiesa and Allegri continue to shrug off Scudetto suggestions, even if they are free of the distractions of European football.

“As the coach said, our objective this season is to qualify for the Champions League and then we will see.”
