Federico Chiesa says he ‘remained calm’ as he describes his goal against Austria and claims the Azzurri deserve to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old broke the deadlock in the extra time of Italy’s last 16 clash of Euro 2020 against Austria at Wembley.

“We deserved to score and qualify. The coach always wants us to be ready, he keeps saying there are 26 starters and everybody wants to help,” Chiesa told Sky Sport Italia.

The former Fiorentina man had given Italy the lead controlling a long pass from Leonardo Spinazzola inside the box and finding the net from a tight angle.

“I remained calm, in these situations, you want to go for the goal straight away. Instead, I decided to stop the ball and take time before the shot on target,” the Juventus winger said.

“Austria have important players, they have quality and they kept the ball possession creating trouble for us, but I believed we deserve to qualify.”
