Injured Chiellini ruled out of Italy-Switzerland

Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini will miss Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Switzerland with an adductor injury.

The 37-year-old missed Juventus‘ Serie A clash against Fiorentina on Saturday and trained separately on Monday during Italy’s first training session at Coverciano.

According to multiple reports in Italy, Chiellini will miss Italy’s World Cup qualifying matches against Switzerland and Northern Ireland.

The Azzurri host Switzerland at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Friday before visiting Northern Ireland the following Monday.

Italy are on even points with Switzerland on top of Group C, but with a better goal difference.

Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolò Zaniolo returned home on Monday while Ciro Immobile pulled out of the Italy squad yesterday with Gianluca Scamacca coming in to replace him.

Chiellini’s teammate Leonardo Bonucci is fit to play against Switzerland despite missing Juventus’ last Serie A match against Fiorentina.

Nicolò Barella is not fully fit and will be assessed by the Azzurri’s medical staff in the coming days.
