Giorgio Chiellini waved goodbye to the Italy shirt with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina. ‘We are looking at the changeover of an era and the squad needs support.’

This was the 37-year-old’s 117th and final appearance in the Azzurri jersey and lasted one half, as he was replaced during the break at Wembley Stadium.

He bowed out with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina in the Finalissima, between the European Champions and Copa America holders.

“We knew it would be difficult tonight. Naturally, we hoped to win a trophy, but that won’t cancel out what we achieved in the past,” Chiellini told RAI Sport.

“As I said in the press conference the other day, I expect a difficult period, we are looking at the changeover of an era and I hope all of Italy can stand by this squad, because it will need their support.”

  1. No one can be shocked.
Until Italy/Serie A changes. These defeats and disappointments will only get worse!
Changes need to happen now. Overhaul Serie A.
Can we not see that there is simoly no real talent for Mancini to pick from.
All this and Bastoni is likely to be shifted to UK and will be replaced by….. another foreigner!
Shocking end of a once football super power.

  2. An era of what excactly? Chiellini became a starter after Italy won the World Cup in 2006. From 2007-2021, 14 years, his biggest achievement for the national team was to lose 0-4 to Spain in the EC final.

It took yet another young generation of italian players to win his first and only international title of his career at the age of 36.

He is no Nesta or Cannavaro.

  3. Check Chiellini’s stats on a per game played basis in CL for past 10 seasons. Compare him against any defender of your choice on interceptions, clearances, tackles, blocks, and won aerial duels. He is second to none. Learn frickin football before disrespecting legends.

  4. Utter nonsense. 1 player can’t do everything. He was a leader. Similar to Canavaro but stronger. Chielini has entered of trophies to show how good he is

  5. Truely Italy don’t deserve to be at the world cup.they re horrible, disgraceful, has no integrity to protect.

  6. This Italian team hasn’t been fully fit for about a year now. They don’t have the depth to consistently field back ups as key players and expect to consistently win. Just not going to happen.

  7. People quickly forget that Italy is the European Champion with Chiellini as the main man on the final

  8. Guy blame seria a they have ruined it all and poor macini how can he pick anyone decent imagine Man City playing Watford every week do you think they would get any better or course not this is what Happening in Italy all the big clubs playing farmers every week case closed

  9. Italy won Euros they played excellent football!!everyone slagging them now because a dip in form yes some of the players aren’t fit but you can’t win them all!
Blimey it’s been a long season playing 50 people matches for 90mins not easy people long live cattenacio…..

  10. Luca, I agree 100%, Big Italian teams are full with foreign players, how many Italians are playing for the top teams? Average 2 or 3
This is what ruining Italy the most. Also Mancini looks like he is out of ideas and this worries me as well. I am afraid that Italy will not be that team to beat and the legend team with the winning mentality.

  11. Do you think that the USA would qualify if they played European teams NO WAY Jose they always qualify because they have no Competition I’m sure we have better striker than immobile
And billotti they both run in circles
