Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini says ‘the national team unites us’ and believes the Azzurri can reach the Euro 2020 Final at Wembley this summer.

The Azzurri start with a friendly against San Marino tomorrow and Chiellini said the team are enjoying the initial part of the retreat but stressed they will turn up the intensity and focus on Monday.

The 36-year-old, capped 106 times, admitted the European Championship could be his ‘last event’ with Italy.

“I’m here with great enthusiasm to experience what will most likely be my last event with the national team,” Chiellini said at a press conference.

“The national team unites us, and our group is the proof of that. We come from many clubs but there’s not the slightest sign of rivalry.

“Thinking of playing in front of 20,000 fans in Rome is wonderful. These days we are having good times together, from Monday, the focus will increase and then we will be ready to start the European Championship.”

And Chiellini believes the Azzurri ‘can go far’ in the Finals this summer and points at Italy’s ‘ambitions to win’.

“We have what it takes to do well, the other teams are strong and we respect them, but it’s normal to have ambitions to win,” Chiellini added.

“All games will be difficult, but we can go far. We can play for a place at Wembley. We have to experience Euro 2020 with enthusiasm, carefree and with a pinch of madness.”
