Giorgio Chiellini remains ‘proud’ of the world record unbeaten run, trusting this defeat to Spain was ‘a necessary stage in the growth process’ for Italy.

The Azzurri had been unbeaten in 37 matches, which included winning the UEFA EURO 2020 trophy three months ago.

Nations League | Italy 1-2 Spain: Bonucci sees Roja

They capitulated 2-1 at San Siro in the Nations League semi-final, to a Ferran Torres brace after Leonardo Bonucci was sent off at the 43rd minute.

“It’s a pity the defeat came in Milan, but there is proud for this extraordinary run of results,” Chiellini told RAI Sport.

“it’s a necessary stage in the growth process for a team that can still do far better. We knew it was a difficult match, we called for patience and clear minds, sometimes you have to accept the opposition is a very strong team that causes you problems.

“It’s a pity, we wanted to continue this unbeaten run, but the fact is this will help our growth process. We almost got it back on level terms when down to 10 men and 2-0 down, so that shows what we’re capable of.”

Italy had also struggled against Spain in the EURO 2020 semi-final, but eventually won on penalties. What was different this time?

“We weren’t as patient this time, compared to July, we were too frantic and had we not been so eager to prove a point by trying to dominate Spain, then we would’ve probably kept it in the balance for longer,” added Chiellini.

Italy will play either France or Belgium in Turin on Sunday with the battle for third place in the Nations League.

“Now we will try to put in a good performance, but the real target is to beat Switzerland in November and secure our place at the World Cup.”

  1. What’s that saying, a picture tells a 1000 words, look at that #2 staring and yelling at Chiellini, this is why I never liked this sort of team, anything to win a game

  2. Calabria should start over Di Lorenzo who has led to many goals suffered in Euros and after. Verratti slows down the game a lot .. Locatelli should start in his place. Jorghino doesn’t offer a goal threat but helps the defence, is a good game reader and his experience is needed in the midfield. Pellegrini the “all rounder” should start ahead of Barella who recently is not doing that well for the national team. And if Barella plays … then Pellegrini as False 9 or in place of Insigne who is very inconsistent and misses so many chances!! Bastoni has to learn fast (that 1st goal wouldn’t have been conceded if Chiellini played!!) .. can he and Roma’s Mancini replace Bonucci and Cheillini?? And we need a strong, tall, clinical target man in the box to score from free-kicks and corners when it’s difficult to score from open play. Big Mistake by Mancini not to sub Chiellini for Bernardeschi as soon as Bonucci got sent off. CHIESA 🔥🌟👌 our Shining Star … Universe Protect Him, Bless Him. Forza Azzurri 🇮🇹👊💙 🍀
