Former Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has sent a message of congratulations to his former Napoli over Whatsapp, in which he told the players that they had deserved to win the Serie A title ‘for years’ and that he was watching on as ‘part of the fans’ on Thursday.

The Senegalese international had registered 317 appearances across all competitions over an eight-year spell for Napoli, before moving to London to join Chelsea for around €40m last summer.

However, despite switching allegiances in the summer, Koulibaly still feels part of the Napoli team and thanked all of those who had made him feel at home in the city after his arrival from Genk in 2014.

“Best wishes to all of you Neapolitan brothers,” Koulibaly wrote in a message on Thursday night. The time has come. “We had to wait years, months, weeks, days, hours … But today it’s done. We are CHAMPIONS OF ITALY.

“This group has made us happy. They fought for an entire population and made us all happy. Yes, I’m part of the fans today.”

He continued: “All the credit goes to this group and all those who work for Napoli because they did what so many have tried to do for years and succeeded. They shed blood for this city, these fans, those people who made me feel at home from day one . So bravo to this Napoli!

“I’m happy for all of us Neapolitans who have deserved it for years and who I hope will have even more in the future. Thank you Napoli.”

Koulibaly also applauded his former employers’ recent accomplishments on an instagram story posted late on Thursday night, replying to one of the pictures posted by Napoli’s official club account earlier in the evening.
