Chelsea and Wales international defender Ethan Ampadu is returning to Serie A after his Venezia experience, moving to Spezia on loan with option to buy.

The centre-back turns 22 next month and spent last season at the Stadio Penzo, unable to prevent their relegation to Serie B.

He is returning to Italy, as Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims a deal is done with Spezia.

This will be a loan agreement with an option to buy for circa €15m at the end of the season.

Ampadu is expected in the Peninsula on Monday so that he can then have his medical on Tuesday.

Other clubs had also been strongly interested in picking up Ampadu for another Serie A experience, including Empoli, Sassuolo and newly-promoted Cremonese.

Ampadu has 35 senior caps for Wales, despite his tender age, and moved to Chelsea in 2017.

He was given loan experienced at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United and Venezia.

Ampadu’s time at Venezia was mixed, as although he provided three assists in 30 competitive games, he was also sent off twice.
