Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Valdebebas in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals.

The Blues’ performance surprised Fabio Capello, who expected Thomas Tuchel’s side to sit deep and play on the counterattack.

“Chelsea have never tried to find spaces in the middle. Aside from [Thibaut] Courtois’s save on [Timo] Werner, the goalkeepers made no saves at all. Real Madrid played on the counterattack, I expected Chelsea to do so,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

“The first half was entertaining. The second half was different.”

Karim Benzema levelled the score with a stunning volley in the first half.

“I think he is among the top three strikers in the world right now, after [Robert] Lewandowski and [Harry] Kane. [Erling] Haaland is the future, the others are playing in bigger clubs, maybe Kane not as much.

“Benzema did two great things tonight, one is the goal. He is an excellent point of reference for Real Madrid, he ran for two, even for Casemiro, who didn’t seem to be on the pitch.

"I've never seen him as strong as he is today."
